Meditations on the Advent Season…Peace / Reflexiones sobre la Época Navideña..Paz

How can we find peace in a world that is so broken?

How can we breathe deep and close our eyes and be at rest in a world where children are caught in war zones, and women are sold as slaves? How can we find respite for our souls when diseases wipe out whole villages, and addictions claim lives?

Where is the peace that is promised us in the candlelight? How can a weary world lift its heads to hear the angels sing?

So much is wrong, so much is battered and seems beyond repair. This tension between the two Advents of Christ is almost unbearable. The weight of the world pushes down on our shoulders, and the dark blocks our sight.

Into such a world was born our Christ. In a manger surrounded by the stench of brokenness and hopelessness…born as King in a world that seemed beyond repair.

And yet He came to repair. He came to bind up wounds, to open clouded eyes…to listen to bleeding hearts, and calm deep suffering. He came to bring peace, and one day peace will reign in every corner of our broken earth.

But in the waiting, we can find that peace. It helps us to see the suffering and move into it. It shows us that even as we suffer, we can help others to find their way.

We see it every day on the streets of San Salvador. There is violence, and poverty, and so much death. Lives spilled out, hopes dashed against the pavement. But there are also young heads lifted up from the pavement. One foot in front of the other, they walk their way toward a place of peace.

One young man shares his story. He was driven from home by violence, and soon addiction caught him on the streets of San Salvador. Today he is searching for peace, and showing others the way. Click here for his story.

We welcome those who are searching for peace to New Dawn, and we extend our hands to give a respite from the tormented sea of life that tosses them around. Soon we will be able to do more, soon we will be able to journey with them on to healing.

It feels like so little…to share this peace that we have found. But in this tension between His coming and His coming back,  that is what we do. We share the peace we have found and look together to the peace that will one day settle over all things for all times.
