El Salvador Orphanage Fundraiser and Golf Outing

As many of you know, our sending church is Discovery Christian Church located in the suburbs north of Pittsburgh, PA. They have been invested in El Salvador just as long as we have and our church really has a desire to make a difference in the lives of the people of this country. They support us financially, prayerfully, and in many other ways. They help us with our mailings, organizing our finances, and they also send teams to help with our ministry. This past year they sent two teams and they did so much to help us…they ran children’s programs in the orphanages, fed the homeless, did work projects in rural communities, and helped us around the YWAM base. We couldn’t be here without them! Once again they are reaching out to […]

This Side of Short-Term Missions

Spending last week with the students from Discovery brought back a lot of memories from short-term mission trips that I have experienced in the past. The first time I travelled outside of the U.S. was on a mission trip to Jamaica where I helped to do some construction on a school for deaf kids. It was a time that changed my life forever. I realized how big the world really is and from that time on I had a desire to be a part of God’s bigger kindgdom in other countries. I felt like on that trip I gained so much more than I gave. Over the years I’ve had great opportunities to participate in short-term mission trips. Each time God worked in my heart to make me see myself and […]

Thank you Discovery!

The Discovery team left to head back to the states early this morning. We are very sad to see them go. We had a great week with them. They were absolutely amazing. It was so encouraging for us to see kids who are as young as 12 working so hard in the heat, stepping out of their comfort zone to spend time with the kids here who are so in need, and to think of others before themselves. Hearing the reflections they had about their week made it clear to me that God has been moving in their lives.  We are here in El Salvador for many reasons…to serve God, to serve the Salvadorans, but also to facilitate experiences like this for people coming to the States. I am so […]

Discovery in El Salvador!

We are so excited to have the student ministry from our home church, Discovery Christian Church, here with us in El Salvador this week! It’s so encouraging to us to have them here helping us out. It is so great to see our friends from the U.S. too.  Two of the girls here with this group used to babysit our kids and they lived right down the street from us in Cranberry. Seeing them was emotional for all of us and some tears were shed. We are definitely going to be sad when they leave this weekend! The group’s excitement about helping El Salvador is awesome and they are doing a great job. They got here on Saturday and they spent yesterday and today helping out at CIPI which is a […]

Great work Discovery!

We had an awesome week with the team from Discovery. They were incredible! They worked so hard and touched many lives in the week they were here. They helped us at the YWAM base, laid a foundation for a home in a rural community, volunteered in the gang filled town of Apopa, and did some work at CISNA and played with the kids there. It was so encouraging to have them partnering with us for the week. They did a great job and we can’t wait for the youth team to come in June! You can check out their take on their time in El Salvador by reading Bryan’s blog at http://bgratton.wordpress.com/.

Discovery Team is Here!

We are so excited to have a service team from our home church, Discovery Christian Church, here in El Salvador this week. They brought donations, as well as seven people to come and serve in and around San Salvador. They are doing a variety of different projects and throughout the week I will post some pictures and updates. You can check out their point of view of their trip by viewing Bryan Gratton’s blog at http://bgratton.wordpress.com/. Bryan is the team leader and one of the pastors at Discovery. He also is a great friend to Jon and I. It is so encouraging for us to have the team here this week…we’ve really missed being away from familiar faces. We’re looking forward to a great week!

Thanks Discovery!

Today we were thrilled to receive a package from Discovery sent by way of Stacie Salva, the Children and Family minister at the church. Discovery Christian Church is our home church and we miss it so much being here in El Salvador. The kids often ask about their friends, so you can imagine their joy and excitement when they opened the package today! Inside were cards made by all of the kids in their classes back at Discovery. They spent probably close to an hour just pouring over each one and talking about their friends back in the States. There was also some candy in there for the kids (and us) so we were all very excited about that! Discovery is a great church…we’ve never been anywhere quite like it and […]
